As a mindful mama, finding the perfect maternity clothes can be a daunting task. Maternity clothing can be expensive and challenging to find the right fit and style for. Sizing is liminted, styles are not all that flattering, and who wants a whole new wardrobe for just 3 months?
But – you also want to look and feel your best during those few months too! You want to embody your glowing mama-to-be-ness, amiright?
That’s where clothing rental services like NUULY and Rent the Runway come in. They’ve become become popular alternatives for many mamas and have totally changed the game for me. I was over feeling like a whale walking around in hubbys old sweats, and was able to really embrace my new bump and rock it.
When I started to rent my maternity clothes, I seriously felt beautiful every day when I rolled out of bed and put on some luxurious fabrics. Even though I was working from home, getting myself dressed everyday and taking myself to the local coffee shop, bump at the ready, made me feel GREAT. I had become really aware of the way my polyester trendy amazon tops were making me feel (read – itchy and oddly clostrophobic).
So, we’re gonna take a look at the two leading clothing rental options for maternity wear – understand why it’s such a fab choice, and I’ll give you my personal review of each.
Why Rental Services are an Excellent Choice for Maternity Clothing:
Pregnancy can be a temporary phase, and buying maternity clothes that may not fit you in a few months can be a waste of money. Rental services provide a solution to this problem, allowing you to rent clothes that fit your changing body size and shape without committing to a long-term purchase. . Renting maternity clothes over buying them offers several benefits, including cost savings, access to a wider variety of styles and brands, and the flexibility to return and exchange items as needed.
Plus, it’s super fun to change up the wardrobe game, especially as your body and who you are becoming is changing. There’s no better way to embody who you want to be than by dressing that way. Renting clothes can be a fun way to experiment with new styles and trends without committing to a purchase. This can help you to expand your wardrobe and find new looks that you love.
Be a Mindful Mama
We’re all about being mindful over here, and being a mindful mama means being conscious of your choices and their impact on your mental and physical health, your baby, and the environment.
Plus, Renting clothes can be a more cost-effective option than buying them, especially for maternity wear that will only be worn for a few months. This can help you save money and reduce financial stress during pregnancy and beyond.
Reduce your mental load:
I can’t tell you how many times my bedroom goes from beautifully clean to tornado city after I try on (and discard) outfits when I’m not feeling my best in my body.
One HUGE benefit to renting is you don’t have to worry about storing them when they are no longer needed. This can help to reduce clutter in your home and make it easier to keep things organized. It’s easy to plan what you’re going to choose in your next box for whatever events you have coming up in the month ahead. I’ve saved TONS of time and money nixing my online shopping habit…
Choose Sustainability
By choosing rental services like NUULY and Rent the Runway, you can make a more sustainable choice for yourself and the planet.
Fast fashion is a major contributor to the textile industry’s negative impact on the environment, with its production and waste causing air and water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and the depletion of natural resources.
Rental services like NUULY and Rent the Runway reduce waste and promote sustainability by extending the lifespan of clothing items, reducing the amount of textile waste in landfills, and encouraging the reuse and recycling of clothes.
Sustainable fashion is not only beneficial to the planet but also to your health and your baby’s. It helps reduce exposure to harmful chemicals used in the textile industry, provides better quality clothes, and supports ethical labor practices.
Both NUULY and RTR have sustainability efforts, with NUULY partnering with organizations to promote ethical fashion.
I always say, we vote with our dollars, and our conscious consumption involves being aware of the impact of your consumption choices on yourself, others, and the environment. Renting clothes is one way to ditch the fast fashion rabbit hole that’s so easy to go down and live a more sustainable lifestyle.
THE SHOWDOWN: NUULY vs Rent The Runway for Maternity Clothes
When it comes to comparing NUULY and Rent The Runway for maternity rental services, both companies offer similar advantages and features. Choosing the best service for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences.
I find the biggest difference between the two options to be the TYPES of clothes that are offered. NUULY offers a diverse range of brands, in trendy, casual styles, including Anthropologie, Free People, and Urban Outfitters. Rent the Runway, on the other hand, offers higher-end designer options, including Oscar de la Renta and Marchesa.
Pricing
NUULY offers a $88/month membership with six items per month, while Rent the Runway offers a $159/month membership for four items at a time. (It seems like their pricing and membership structures are ALWAYS changing, so check out their websites for the latest).
THE VERDICT:
Here’s the low down. RTR is the OG in clothing rental, and while they’re a FAB choice, NUULY is my go-to monthly staple for a few reasons:
Wearability
NUULY’s brand of clothing is more WEARABLE for the everyday mama.
With an average body type and doing everyday mama things – like school and daycare drop off, food shopping, hopping around town, working at the coffee shop and attending neighborhood BBQs and celebrating by besties at weddings and baby showers. NUULY uplevels my everyday life with quality fabrics and trying out new styles in high-quality fabrics that I feel great in.
I’ve found RTR fashions to be slightly more avant-guarde, and while perfection for show-stopping choices, my everyday trip to work at the coffeeshop doesn’t require a crop top to show off my preggers belly or a signature Christian Soriano shoulder ruffle
Quality
In my use of both services, the quality of the clothes I’ve received at NUULY are definitely higher. Usually half of my monthly box is brand new with tags. While with RTR, although the craftsmanship is top-notch, the clothes have definitely been WARN, sometimes a few too many times for my liking..
Overall
If you had to ask me to choose between the two? I’d choose NUULY. BUT – Definitely check out RTR AND NUULY for your maternity fashions for a sustainable take on these few months of major body changes. It’s great for the environment and can also make you FEEL really fab during this incredible moment in your life.
